All good things must come to an end, and that includes the Secret Universe by COMPANY. This unique exhibition at Design Museum will close on the 29th of September, but not before a proper celebration. Our last Holy Day event pays homage to the culture and crafts traditions of Mexico. Our special guests will be Mexican master artisans Pedro and Tomas.
Traditional crafts methods can be seen in demonstrations of work by the master artisans
The demonstrations of work, lasting one hour, will be held at noon, 2 pm and 4.30 p.m. in the Secret Universe exhibition on the second floor.
The high points of the event day will be the demonstrations of work by master artisans from Mexico visiting the Design Museum. Pedro Hernandez Cruz makes dolls and masks from papier-mâché. He will demonstrate the stages of making a traditional Mexican catrina doll. The catrina dolls are said to crystallize the mood of the feast of the Day of the Dead.
Along with papier-mâché, we will also be given a look at the tradition of work in tin. Tomas Ricardo Santiago Pacheco bends and curves sheet metal into objects and toys. His demonstrations of work will have audio accompaniment by Tuomas Toivonen.
Accompaniment to tin work: Ceremonial music
A soundscape by architect and composer Tuomas Toivonen will be heard in the exhibition space. In this work, the clanging of tools recorded by Song and Olin on their travels merges with a chorus of mechanical and synthesized sounds. On the event day, Toivonen will present adaptations ceremonial music during the demonstrations of tin work.
The Faces of Mexico Mask Workshop

The Day of the Dead, commemorating the lives of departed loved ones, is celebrated in Mexico at the beginning of November. In the Faces of Mexico workshop, you can work with cardboard and rubber bands to make a mask inspired by Mexican culture.
The workshop is open to visitors of all ages and it is free of charge. Participation as places become available. No bookings.
The Secret Universe exhibition’s Service Desk
Open from 3 pm to 5 pm in the Secret Universe exhibition on the second floor.
Study objects by looking at them, touching them and trying them out at the Secret Universe exhibition’s Service Desk. Behind the desk are over 200 products designed by COMPANY during the Secret Universe project. They have been made by local master craftspeople and small factories around the world. The Service Desk is an experiential and participatory work in which exhibition visitors can personally inspect some of the objects.
