The love of comfort has been influencing the development of fashion for the past hundred years. Dress codes are increasingly less formal, and clothing has become more relaxed and significantly more comfortable to wear. The corona pandemic has further increased the need for a casual dress style that would seem to be a strong future trend as well.
The Curator of the Comfort Revolution exhibition Liisa Jokinen is also a photographer who’s been specializing in street fashion both in Helsinki and New York. In this online tour, she will guide the audience through the exhibition and the ’comfortable changes’ in modern every day and streetwear.
”Before everyone wore jeans – now it’s college pants or sweat pants. In New York, Crocs are a fashion-conscious footwear choice. The most comfortable of the garments dominate the street scene. Aren’t people interested in dressing anymore? Yes, they are, but instead of rigid dress codes, our outfit choices are determined by the pursuit of well-being and comfort,” Liisa Jokinen states.
About the exhibition
Clothes once worn strictly out of sight, as undergarments or at home, have become a part of everyday fashion. Leggings and the slip dress have all gone from underwear to outerwear. Sweat pants and Crocks shoes have migrated from clothes that are strictly worn in the privacy of one’s own house to fashionable trend pieces worn by celebrities.
The Design Museum summer exhibition the Comfort Revolution highlights these changes in the way we dress and how they reflect changes in society. The history of the 100-year-old Finnish design brand Nanso is inextricably intertwined with these fashion trends and is used as an example. The exhibition will examine changes in the way we dress through Nanso’s nightwear, undergarments and loungewear production.
