Panel discussion with HIAP designers-in-residence 2018, Laura Spring and Elina Laitinen

DESCRIPTION
To round up their first of two working visits in Helsinki, HIAP designers-in-residence Laura Spring (UK) and Elina Laitinen (FI) will discuss their practices and their upcoming research in the frame of this year’s HIAP design residency programme. Under the theme “Arranging Practice: Proximity, Distance, Instance,” the discussion will center on the designers’ motivations for locating their work in close proximity to their cooperators, tools and materials and attempt to conceptualize this arrangement, exemplary for a momentous current in contemporary design, in view to the historical birth of design by the separation of planner and maker as well as to today’s condition of computation-inspired instantaneous, super-territorial activity.

The HIAP design residency programme is produced in cooperation with the British Council, Helsinki Design Week, Aalto University and the Design Museum.
Juuso Tervo
Juuso Tervo graduated from Aalto University School of Arts in 2011 and received his Ph.D. in Arts Research from The Ohio State University (US) in 2014. He currently is a postdoctoral researcher at Aalto University and the project coordinator for the University Wide Art Studies (UWAS), in which function he coordinates transdisciplinary art and design courses for all Aalto students. Juuso’s research focuses on philosophy, history, and politics of art and education, combining a range of conceptual frameworks including critical theory, literary theory, political philosophy, and philosophy of history.
Leena Svinhufvud
She began her work as the educational curator of Design Museum in 1998. Her work involves design education and events for the public. Design offers excellent opportunities for learning in museums and anywhere. She particularly want to help people to understand the history of design. She is an art historian by training and I completed her PhD in 2009 on the modernization of applied art in Finland. She is also an active researcher and teacher of design history and has curated several exhibitions of textile art.
Martin Born – moderator of the panel discussion
Martin Born is a curator and designer working in Helsinki. After design studies in Germany and the Netherlands he obtained his degree from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2007. Since then he has explored design as a cultural capacity in his non-disciplinary practice as a spatial, furniture and concept designer, craftsman and producer as well as a curator, critic and consultant in design and the arts. Martin has taught at Aalto University School of Design, curated the graduation exhibition at Kolding School of Design (DK) in 2013, the Masters of Aalto exhibition in 2014, and “Lehmä pitää viedä jäälle, jotta se tanssii,” an overview of forty years of contemporary Finnish art, in Germany in 2017. Martin’s work has been shown at the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, the NAi Rotterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in Luxembourg. Together with textile designer Rosa Tolnov Clausen, he curates the HIAP design residency programme since 2017.
