Vision with Ali Al-Saffu
Lights, camera, action! On Friday, 25 October, the CreativeMornings/Helsinki stage will be graced by none other than Ali Al-Saffu, an emerging talent in Finnish film. As a Finnish-Iraqi storyteller, Ali captures life in the East-Helsinki suburbs through the eyes of young immigrants, blending authenticity with heart. His debut film NORMAALII broke new ground, made on a shoestring budget with the power of community behind him. Now, Ali is working on his next project, IISI KEISSI VELI, where personal experience meets creative expression in a new format for Yle Areena.
So, what drives Ali to tell these stories? How does he balance the weight of representation with his passion for filmmaking? And when is a story truly “done” – or does the process itself fuel new narratives? Ali’s films ask these very questions, and his journey from actor to director has given him a unique perspective on the immigrant experience in Finland.
🍩 Breakfast is served at 8:15 am, followed by Ali’s talk at 9:00 am sharp. Come learn about the challenges of indie filmmaking, the importance of community in bringing stories to life, and the deep connection between personal history and creative output.
Whether you’re an aspiring filmmaker, storyteller, or just a fan of honest, grassroots cinema, Ali’s insights will nourish your creative hunger.
