The Habitare Collection
13 – 17 September
Habitare
Helsinki Fair Centre
Design Museum’s Habitare collection will feature Better Shelter developed by Ikea and UNHCR – The UN Refugee Agency for refugee camps
The Habitare Collection is a special collection exhibition held every second year in connection with the Habitare Fair and organised jointly by Habitare and Design Museum. Curated by a panel of experts, this year’s exhibition will feature 15 design objects by international stars of design.
The largest object on show is Better Shelter, a structure for temporary accommodation for refugee camps and situations following natural disasters. It is an easily moved shelter assembled from parts that has been developed by UNCHR – the UN Refugee Agency and Ikea. Resembling a house, this shelter is meant to provide privacy and conditions resembling a home for people in situations of catastrophe.
Although it is basically temporary, Better Shelter is a considerably safer and more durable solution than traditional tents, for example, in refugee camps. Better Shelter is meant to last at least three years of use.
Design Museum’s Habitare Collection as a whole is on show inside Better Shelter. After the exhibition, Better Shelter will be included in Design Museum’s collection of 75,000 objects.
The Habitare Collection will be on display in the Ahead! design area from 13 to 17 September 2017.
